Milne becomes first province to get cyclone monitoring system.

Milne Bay is the first province in Papua New Guinea to install a computerized cyclone monitoring system and could also be first in the country with fully-equipped media and disaster center with monitoring and communication facilities.

The system is the second apart from that used by National Weather Service in the country. It contains two radio studios which can broadcast up the northern coastline as far as East Sepik and to the New Guinea Islands and along the southern coastlines.

The radio capacity is such that it can be used to run a fully-fledged commercial radio station as well as a surveillance and monitoring talk-back radio to the islands.

The installation of the monitoring system means that Milne Bay would be the only other place to sound out warnings on strong winds. Governor Tim Neville will launch the media centre in two months.

Located directly opposite the Alotau International Hotel, the centre is a landmark for Alotau town in architectural design and beautiful garden setting. I t has a large fully-knitted conference room. Governor Nevilles wants that basic disaster-related equipment ranging from body bags to survival kits are stored in the media centre.

He sees the centre also as a vital tool for tourism promotion and information dissemination on a whole lot of issues ranging from fisheries, education, health, women’s affairs, youth and any other information that is vital for life in the maritime province.

Does the National Weather Service fund the system?
