Crime in PNG

Hi everyone, my husband has the opportunity to work in PNG for 2 years. We are South African, but have lived in Lagos, Nigeria for the last 3 years, so we are used to expat life! My ONLY worry about PNG is the crime - I have read some horror stories on websites (gang rapes, murders, hijackings, armed robberies etc etc..) and I don't want to be a victim of any of these .. Obviously one has to take safety precautions in any country in the world; but is it really that bad?? We will be staying in Port Moresby. thanx

There are quite a lot of expat women, though there are more expat men than women. Expat women, generally, are scared to go out and seek friends but if you open up a bit and establish a network between the expat women, then socializing should not be a problem. It's a matter of befriending an expat woman who will then introduce you to other expat women.

Nightlife in Port Moresby is restricted to nightclubs and pubs. There are other places but there are more nightclubs and pubs than others. some nightclubs are dodgy. However, good places to visit are Yacht Club, Gold Club and Pondo Tavern. These venues are frequented by expats so you can make friends with other expats there. There are no cinemas in Moresby so if you are looking for a place to go see movies then you can't find one in Port Moersby.

Wink

what are you talking about Mrs. Nolte? "gang rapes, murders, hijackings, armed robberies etc etc"... are synonymous with Lagos! PEEELEEEZZZZ ........Port Moresby doesn’t even come close to the crime wave that Nigeria experiences.

if you survived "NIJA" you'll survive PNG!!!!!!!

Actually Nigeria is very mild compared to South Africa (Johannesburg is where the big crime problem is).. I feel MUCH safer here than there. The Nigerians are not a violent nation at all and there is no such thing as rape here; whereas in SA alot of violent/hate crime is committed. So that was my worry, but Im glad to hear that Port Moresby is fine! I wonder why you always hear the bad things instead of the good about a place .. Thanks for all the info !!

Nina, every country in the world is not safe. Talk about America and its allies...lot of people live in fear of being targets of terrorist etc. Far worse than that.. is Baghdad. There is no place in the world where you wont find any social problems.. As for Port Moresby, surely it has its problems, but, it depends on how you take precautions. I am an educated Papua New Guinean who live in Port Moresby and i feel sad for expats who lock themselves up in class houses, frightened by the media frenzy. Surely, Port Moresby has its problems, but fear can imprison a lot of people from living. I have seen expats who live in Port Moresby for years but never get out and enjoy what Port Moresby has to offer. I have a lot of expat friends who enjoy their lives in a night-club having a few beers and enjoying their life when they are here. So you see, if you want to really enjoy PNG or Port Moresby for that matter, all you need to do is get to know a Papua New Guinean friend. PNG people are not that bad, they will treat you with respect and they will take you in as a family member..

Few tips.. for you to ponder on.. Dont worry about the crime. Come enjoy Port Moresby and what it has to offer..
