PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair takes on an ‘arty’ look !

The PNG Coffee Festival & Trade Fair in Goroka on May 2 and 3 will see a selection of new and exciting events that will be added to make the festival exciting and interesting for visitors.

One of those will be an exhibition of contemporary artwork to be selected from artists living and working in and around Goroka and the Eastern Highlands Province.

The exhibition will serve as a platform for artists, both established and emerging, to share with visitors and locals their accounts of experiences and visions of their communities and society.

Goroka can be proud as the real hub of growing and producing some of the country's best Arabica Coffee.

However, little is known about Goroka's artistic heritage and contribution to the development of contemporary arts in PNG.

Ruki Fame, (late) Jakupa and (late) Akis are some of the forerunners in contemporary art in PNG and had their formative years in Goroka.

One of the best-known theatre groups, Raun Raun Theatre, had its humble beginnings in Goroka.

Today the Eastern Highlands can also proudly acknowledge the contributions being made by Pax Jakupa, the son of Jakupa and Tom Deko in fine art and metal sculpture respectively in the Pacific region.

With that heritage as a backdrop the art exhibition is a small but sure way of ensuring that the Eastern Highlands' cultural contributions do not waver or diminish in these tough times because '… our contemporary artists will pass into history as our artists, our visionaries, our prophets in our times' (Bernard Narakobi 1990).

Deb Chapman, Michael Mel and Richard Cornish will coordinate the art exhibition.

A venue for the exhibition is being negotiated with various people in Goroka.

Visitors should not only come to be part of the fun and frills of the Festival events at the Raun Raun Theatre the Art Exhibition but also be prepared to spend time at the art exhibition to be part of an art event that aims to be exciting and innovative.
