Lae - Commonwealth Bank jeep, which normally carried a round dozen with arms and legs dangling everwhere. The story goes that when a new constable came to town in the 60's he pulled them over and told them they would have to keep their limbs confined to the vehicle. This they managed to achieve by six of them climbing out on the far side. Then, when the new constable roared off on his motor bike, they climbed back in and went on their merry way. (I'm not vouching for the veracity of this one - if true, that constable was either a good sport or as thick as two short planks).

Thanks for the memories

Hi wendy

Thanks again for posting these photos of lae from the era when we were there (before moving to moresby). We have very few photos or keepsakes of growing up in png - we lost them during Cyclone Tracy in Darwin after we moved south in '74, so these photos fill a void. I have very vivid memories of PNG from childhood to teenage, and these photos trigger even more (good) memories. This is the closest I'll get to a photo album for my son, who is keenly interested in PNG based on my recollections of growing up there .Thank you again. cheers Jim

Hi Jim,

I was sorry to hear about the loss of your photos. My mum and dad were in the same boat - they lost most of their Lae photos (ones in which us kids featured) in a studio fire when they put them in with a photographer to be copied. Fortunately, my husband, who came to Lae with the Commonwealth Bank in '64, and then did a stint in Madang and Hagen, was a keen shutterbug and in love with the beauties of New Guinea. He took several hundred slides and sent them back to his family - again, many had disappeared by the time we came South in 1967 - but we still have approx. 300. We have a slide night every few years - as long as it's not TOO often, our kids are interested in seeing where I grew up.

Like you, I have only good memories of my 14 years in Lae - I was too young to remember much about our two years in Rabaul, but I have a handful of mental pictures of that time ('52-53). Being shaken out of bed by my first guria; dad propping open the shutters on our tar paper house; being in a dinghy and looking down into crystal clear waters; coming south on our first leave in a Catalina - two decks, which was very exciting, raincoats for takeoff to keep the passengers dry, and my sister, who was born in Rabaul and was still a baby when we left, being carried by Mum in a Buka basket. Neither Bob nor I ever spent any time in Moresby (except at the airport in transit).

Regards,
Wendy

This one is taken when I was sixteen, inside the RSL club in 1965 at the regular talent quest they held at the time. I'm singing, and my mum and dad are sitting at the table in the centre.
Amazing photos. My brothers, Nick and Ed, and me (James) performed at this talent quest. We sang a Beatles song and wore Beatle wigs. My father, Jim, was the Editor of the newspaper in Lae at this time.

Hi Jim,

Glad you liked them. I see you're a few years younger than me - what year did you and your brothers perform in the talent quest?

Regards, Wendy
