Hi there Courtney I know the MDC spare parts shops your talking about. They have pretty much MDC spare parts shops all over the country now. Jim Tapako is a wealthy Lae Businessman. I think I might know your fathers name!

Unhappy Horse riding and Lae

Once upon a time horse riding in Lae was very popular, and there were a lot of people involved in the club. It was still going strong in the mid 80's.

They even had a race meeting once a month out of town. Don't think this is still happening though, due to the danger associated with actually getting to the race track. Also the expat population has diminished greatly over the years.

It was and should still be possible to purchase horses in Lae. Not so sure about the safety of riding at the show grounds anymore though. Things have changed a lot in the past 20 years. Might even come from old race horse blood.

Maybe someone from Lae can fill in the last 20 years.

Good luck with it though.

Horses , Horses , Horses

I was in Lae from 1964-1982 heavily into horse riding, in fact basically lived at the Showgrounds. Went to Bulae and LIHS then boarding school. Knew the Jacobsons, Johstons, Pelgens, Vollerts,Tilleys.Utchtitz, Murrays and all the others at the time. At one stage we were having pony club camps at Dumpu and ERAP. Any body else there at that time?????
