MY JOURNEY 13 (goroka 1971)

This house at West Goroka was all but one from the corner which was directly opposite the entrance to the Goroka Showground.

In 1971 (or 70) an announcer called the wrong dance group as winners and a riot erupted. In the confusion as hundreds tried to flee the ground they completely flattened a two metre high chainwire fence and many were cut on barbed wire.

Directly outside my house,in the barret, about half a dozen warriors, bows and arrows cocked, positioned themselves against an unidentified enemy.Fortunately sanity prevailed as the mistake was corrected and the right dance group were given the prize. There was no serious harm to anyone but it certainly was a scary occasion.

The other images are of (1) Goroka Hospital (2) Goroka Market (3) Council Roundhouses (4) & (5) Goroka Showground.
