The Call of the Wild

Call of the Wild (1935):
This 1935 movie based on Jack London’s novel The Call of the Wild and starring Clark Gable and Loretta Young.
However as I have found out this movie omits all but one of the book’s story lines and the names of characters have changed.
It is an enjoyable movie set at a snowy environment with main characters looking for gold.
Gable and Young makes for good leads and so it was with regret that I came across something disturbing relating to the production of this movie which I won’t go into.

Call of the Wild: Howl Buck:
Released in 1981 and running just over an hour, Call of the Wild: Howl Buck is the 1981 anime version of Call of the Wild.
Pretty enjoyable version and the animation is not bad, if not spectacular to look at.
Good job of the narrator in explaining Buck’s perspective in all this.

The Call of the Wild: Dog of the Yukon:
This 1997 adaption of The Call of the Wild starred Rutger Hauer and narrated by Richard Dreyfuss.
This is truly superb film with Hauer very good as John Thornton.
This film ends with a quote by The Call of the Wild author Jack London and it was quite inspiring words of what mankind really means.
I finished this film on August 11 2019 and I was shocked to find out that Hauer had recently died on July 19 so seeing this Call of the Wild has become an unexpected tribute to him.

In Memory of Rutger Hauer (1944-2019)

Call of the Wild (2009):

Released in 2009, this is not a direct adaptation of the novel by Jack London.

It is instead has a young girl visiting her grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) where they found a wolf-dog which she named Buck after the one in the Call of the Wild book which grandpa reads to her during the course of this movie.

Heartwarming movie which culminates with a race on who gets to own Buck.

The Call of the Wild (2020):
This version of Call of the Wild stars Harrison Ford as John Thornton.
Heartwarming story about the dog Buck as we see his journey with changes of masters before being with John Thornton.
Playing the villain Hal is Dan Stevens and not bad the adversary that he makes to Thornton culminating to their final encounter. Incidentally I am also seeing Stevens in his lead role in the Legion TV series.
My highlight with this movie is with the brief appearance by my wife Karen Gillan
My wife Karen came in with the sound of her laughter.
The moment I heard that laugh I knew it was her.
Despite being brief it was very nice to see her here.

As The Call of the Wild is about a dog named Buck, coincidentally just before I went in to see this new version of The Call of the Wild, I saw a dog laying on the ground and I immediately thought Buck!

TV WEEK of February 29-March 6 2020 has a piece on The Call of the Wild (2020), entitled Gone to the Dog and the last sentence included this:
"also starring Doctor Who favourite Karen Gillan."
