Goroka Show 2003 - Message from Governor Malcom Smith-Kela

EASTERN Highlands Governor Mal Smith-Kela has assured travel and tourism agents that the annual Goroka Show would be a permanent fixture on his province's calendar.

He gave the assurance in a letter to 2003 Goroka Show executives last month.

Mr Smith-Kela said his Provincial Government has included the annual cultural event in the province's five-year plan, which pinpoints tourism as a major priority for the province.

"My government will concentrate on the development of an increasing number of tourist events every year including the staging of district cultural shows, the coffee festival, eco- tourism 'events and pikinini cultural show," Mr Smith-Kela said.

Goroka Show president Mewie Launa thanked the governor for its support, noting that the provincial govern- ment has been the major sponsor of the show.

Mr Launa said the renewed commitment would ensure that the 2003 Goroka Show would be much bigger and better.

He said this year's show would be staged from September 12-14 at the usual National Sports lnsitute grounds.

"The show committee will critically screen singsing groups and per- formers for pure traditional costumes prior to the actual event," Mr Launa said.

"This year's show will be fully traditional and would be very entertain- ing," he said.

Mr Launa called on interested sponsors to contact his office, as each event will be up for business and corporate sponsorships.

Those interested can call Goroka Show Office on telephone number + 675 7321366.
