The Buccaneers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Buccaneers_(TV_series)

The Buccaneers ran for 39 episodes between September 19 1956 and June 12 1957.

It is a pirate series that starred Robert Shaw as Captain Dan Tempest.

Blackbeard:
Series opener.
Unusually for a series opener the series lead actor being Robert Shaw does not turn up here. In fact he would not turn up until the third episode Captain Dan Tempest.
In the meantime Alec Clunes as Governor Woodes Rogers fills in well as the series lead actor.
Not bad opener to the series which sees the meeting of the legendary episode title character with a good fight out at sea.

The Raiders:
Episode 2.
The menace of the said raiders is well played here and quite clever how Governor Woodes got some men to help him in his fight against these raiders.

Captain Dan Tempest:
Episode 3.
Robert Shaw finally makes his entrance as the episode title captain and what an initial encounter he has with the Governor.
Enjoyable when Tempest faced off Blackbeard.

Dan Tempest's War with Spain:
Episode 4.
Enjoyable episode in which Captain Tempest and his men drives off the Spaniards from the island.
With Governor Rogers' absence, acting governor Beamish sure looked like a buffoon when the island was taken over by the Spaniards and thrown in the cell.

The Wasp:
Episode 5.
Introduction of the episode title character.
Good introductory episode of the Wasp in the midst of another encounter with Blackbeard and Wilfred Downing sure bought a sincerity to the character.

Whale Gold:
Episode 6.
The episode title refers to how waxy substance from whales could become perfumes and therefore make a lot of money hence why it is whale gold.
Not bad in showing the greed that came out of acquiring the said whale gold.

The Slave Ship:
Episode 7.
Interesting premise of slaves on a slave ship and how Tempest deals with them and the money that comes from their slavery.
Doctor Who would explore a similar premise a little over a decade later in The Highlanders.
Incidentally The Slave Ship guest star Earl Cameron was in the Doctor Who story The Tenth Planet which was two stories prior to The Highlanders.

Gunpowder Plot:
Episode 8.
Captain Tempest has tasked himself with getting extra gun powder from the Admiralty but this request is denied by the Governor (Andre Morrell) because he could not see the dangers that warrants it, that of pirate raids.
So Captain Tempest does something really daring by staging a pirate raid of his own in order to convince the Governor to give him the gunpowder.
Absolute ingenious this idea of how the extra gun powder was given and a jolly good fun that came of this idea.

The Ladies:
Episode 9.
There is an important cargo that is coming that of ladies and when Captain Tempest learns that Blackbeard got wind of this, the former beat the latter to the punch with Tempest's men impersonating the ladies as they fight Blackbeard and his men.
A bit amusing seeing Tempest's men as ladies ensuing in the fight between them and Blackbeard and his men.
However not all the ladies got off safely as there was Christine, the ship captain's daughter but luckily was kept safe by Tempest.
Christine was a bit of a hindrance but this was easily smoothed over.

The Surgeon of San Rojo:
Episode 10.
The said surgeon is kidnapped by Dan and Armando in order to treat the inhabitants of their island with an epidemic.
Funny seeing Dan and Armando posing as Indians in order to get to the surgeon.
Also funny that since the surgeon had technically become a prisoner of war for the English that Dan plans to engineer an escape for the surgeon in order to keep his word to let him go once the surgeon had treated the illness on the island.
