Port Moresby Markets

Colourful PNG made Bilums are in abundance at the Ela Beach Markets, held last Saturday of each month.

A 'bilum bag' is used for carrying anything from babies to root vegetables. These bags are used in many parts of PNG. Originally made from beaten and woven bark and dyed with ochres and umbers from earth and plants, they often appear now in bright coloured nylon or thread dyed with store paints.

Large bilums such as these, are worn around the forehead so that the bag itself drapes across the back of the carrier. Worn in this way they are simply another layer of clothing.

Clay Pots

Papuans make these clay pots that usually sell for around K15-K20.00 each. Good for pot plants.

Highlands Bilum

Very popular bilums in PNG are made in the Highlands. This is a typical example of their work.

For the visiting tourist to our site, bilums are all hand made and can take many months to complete the finished article, depending on size and design.

Another variety of laundry basket

If you like baskets without lids - these are available from Ela Beach Markets last Saturday in every month....can be expensive, so better make sure you have lots of cash. They can sell anywhere from K250 to K700 depending on the size.
