Exclamation Huge payouts is sick!!!

PARLIAMENT yesterday approved hefty payments for former Prime Ministers, Speakers and Chief Justices on the second last day of the sitting for this Parliament’s term.

These payments include K75,000 for the purposes of em-ploying an executive assistant and personal security and for the former prime ministers, speakers and chief justices. They will be responsible personally for the appointments of who shall be employed on a negotiated contract, administered by Parliament for the former speakers and prime ministers and by judiciary services for the former chief justices.

Minister for Education Michael Laimo tabled the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) report.

The other benefits are:

* K25,000 entertainment allowance yearly and to be made available monthly.
* The Parliament to meet the cost of official domestic travels by a former prime minister and a speaker and their spouses, subject to approval by the Chairman of the SRC. This shall also apply to a former chief justice.

* The Parliament shall meet all costs of overseas travel for this three where such travel is deemed to be in the national interest by the Chairman of the SRC.

* The three shall be paid an accommodation allowance at the same rate as determined for a State Minister from time to time and the allowance shall be paid monthly in retrospect.

* The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary will be responsible for providing security for these three individuals with the Parliament being responsible for salaries and allowances, including overtime. In addition a support vehicle allowance at the same rate as is applicable to a Minister of State from time to time shall be paid in order to provide a vehicle for use by the leaders’ staff. The allowance shall be paid on a monthly basis with provision for an advance payment of up to 24 months allowance at the discretion of the Chairman of the SRC to facilitate the purchase of an appropriate vehicle.

* Transport Benefit. This benefit shall be determined to be an allowance at the same rate as is paid to a former prime minister who remains in Parliament.
These leaders are eligible for these benefits if they have served for a minimum of two years and are to continue during the life time of these persons unless they re-enter Parliament or be appointed to any State or Constitutional Office for which he is paid a salary.

In other SRC determinations:

* These leaders would still be paid their housing entitlements for the upkeep of a family residence.

* Remuneration package for the Secretary of National Judicial Staff Services to be upgraded to the level of department head at Executive Grade 5 at a salary level of K78,720 per annum.

* The SRC also determined that the president of the Autonomous Bougainville Government rec-eives KK75,000 annually, speaker and vice-president at K55,000, minister and deputy speaker at K35,000 and member at K20,000.

This is a joke coming from the Government when all the Teachers, Nurses and all the other Public Servants are suffering and yet they just add another slap again to the hardworking people.

This Government is going out of control and we are all going to feel the pinch soon.

This is not right!

Thumbs down Protest is Needed

I call on various student representatives to lead the general public in voicing their outcry. It is downright illogical to think of beefing up your account when services and goods needs to be delivered to the majority of the people, infrastructure needs to be built and the list goes on.
