Sihereni coffee project attracts world renown Starbucks Coffee and ADB

by JAMES KILA

THE FINEST and remarkable quality arabica coffee produced by Sihereni Coffee Project in the rural outback of Asaro in the Daulo district of Eastern Highlands has somewhat captured the attention of the international organisations.

Last weekend the Asian Development Bank (ADB) representative and project analyist and Team leader visited, David Moles the Sihereni coffee project and indicated to counter-fund the establishment of a new wet factory to process coffee beans.

The total cost of the new wet coffee factory establishment would be around K800,000. Of the amount ADB would contributed a sum of around K560,000.

Mr Moles travelled to Goroka with his family including his wife Jojo to see and experience a true Highlands environment.

A week earlier representative from Starbucks visited the project and expressed interest in the way the project was progressing in maintaining good quality coffee.

The Switzerland based Starbucks Coffee is world renown for its chain of coffee shops numbering over 8,500, spread around the globe.

The company representative in form of its Director Green Coffee Quality, Christopher Jordan quietly slipped into the country to pay a courtesy call on the Sihereni coffee project last Sunday.

During his visit he paid particular attention on how coffee is cultivated, picked and processed. He was very impressed in the approach Sihereni Coffee was undertaking in drying all its parchment using drying beds above ground.

Mr Jordan also mentioned that Starbucks had been receiving coffee from PNG for over 10-years, however, two top quality plantation coffee that had really drawn his attention were that of Sihereni in upper Asaro and Kigibah in the Waghi Valley.

Starbucks has a remarkable mission statement which is to establish the organisation as the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world while maintaining its uncompromising principles as it grows.

“We are very humbled and prive ledged to have such a recognised and reputable organisation visit the Sihereni coffee project,” said chairman of the Sihereni Coffee Project, David Oromarie.

Mr Jordan was accompanied to the Sihereni project site by the general manager of Nambawan Coffee Limited, Brendan Ellis and Kigibah Coffee Estate managing director

Sihereni Coffee is definitely a model coffee plantation rehabilitation project which at its own accord set its own pace to achieving quality control beginning from picking to green bean or exportable coffee.

Mr Oromarie initially set the inroads for a major coffee rehabilitation, evidently bringing to life a once run-down plantation to a respectable status. News of his achievement has reached wider circles of the coffee industry.

However, his biggest success if actually from the cherry picking stage where cherries harvested from the trees are only red ripe. Those which are purchased from road-side are later sorted out by workers to maintain a very consistent quality beginning from the cherry stage.

Notably, in just over two years Sihereni coffee has won the hearts many reputable coffee exporters with its superb coffee parchment, which are selling at double and triple “A” grade, in fact a remarkable achievement in just a short space of time.

“Quality control is the basis of our operation. Quality Control standards have been established and are made sure they are maintained at all times,” said Mr Oromarie

Ends…./
