2 knights and a dame

THERE are two knights and a dame in this year’s new year honours.
West New Britain leader Lukas Waka, who served many years as a public servant and later went into politics to become premier, was promoted to knight bachelor (Kt). He already has an OBE.
The most high ranking knighthood went to National Capital District MP Bill Skate, made Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (KCMG) for services to Papua New Guinea.
Sir William already has a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order (CMG) of St Michael and St George.
Hard-working Moresby South MP Carol Kidu, known as Lady Kidu because her late husband was a knight, has been recognised in her own right with the female equivalent of a knighthood — the DBE — Same Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to the community and politics.
The only CMG this year went to New Ireland and former parliamentarian Obed Boas, for services to politics and the community. There was only one recipient of the CBE or Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, the next most senior award — John Francis Kaupa for services to commerce and industry.
The bigger groups were in the lower categories with the exception of the Imperial Service Order (ISO), always given to a single person per occasion.

* Allan John Hooper for services to the community and to education;

* The Reverend Samson Kaveu Lowa for services to religion;
* John Wagalia Malisa ISO, for public services and broadcasting; and
* Celia Mary Naoni for services to health and the community.
To be made an ordinary member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE);
* Togi Ted Bao for public service;
* Lohia Bogagu for services to the community;
* Chief Pilot Leonard Michael Cleaver, for services to the aviation industry and the government;
* Mathias Dogia for services to local government affairs;
* Jessie Griffiths for public service;
* Airi Gunu for services to nursing;
* Barbara Mimino for services to the Department of Foreign Affairs;
* Francis Muriki for public service;
* Richard Tamari Nagai for services to sports and the community;
* Wai Onum, for services to the people of Anglimp;
* Councillor Morea Laghui Sere, for public service;
* Iava Sioa, for services to politics and the community;
* Ludwina Umba, for services to nursing;
* Emie Kavanamur Wari, for services to the business sector in chartered accounting; and
* Andrew Wauwia, for services to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary;
To be made an ordinary member of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire (MBE):
* Lieutenant Colonel Kerry Raga Ragagal, for services to the Papua New Guinea Defence Force.
To be made a Companion of the Imperial Services Order (ISO):
* Theo Ilihi, for services to health.

* Vincent Gorogo, for services to Customs and Government;
* Apere Goso, for services to the community, the church and business;
* Bonnie Iara, for services to nursing;
* Kevin Kasimbua, for services to the business sector and the government;
* Senior Sergeant David Diebu Kewere, for services to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary;
* Chief Sergeant Timmeaus Korada, for services to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary;
* Mirem Maginberem, for services to nursing;
* Joel Mewanda, for services to the community;
* Edith Nombo, for services to nursing;
* Lucas David Poka, for services to the church and the community;
* Siava Rei, for services to nursing;
* Councillor Opao Fo’o Udia, for public service;
