Kavieng Diocese hold GA workshop

….family, formation, self reliance top diocesan plans

By Veronica Hatutasi
DELEGATES from the three Deaneries of the Kavieng Catholic Diocese in the New Ireland province recently met and deliberated on issues discussed at the conclusion of the General Assembly (GA) in Vunapope in July.

Priests, the religious, women, youth, laymen and church workers representing the Kavieng, Namatanai and Lorengay deaneries attended a weeklong workshop early last month at the Diocesan Peter ToRot conference center in Kavieng.

The workshop was facilitated by Fr Sylvester who is the Youth Coordinator with the Catholic Bishops Conference office in Port Moresby.
The workshop also came up with a Mission, Visions and Pastoral Priorities Plan for the Diocese as required by the General Assembly in its bid to include the whole church in its planning process. While the events of the GA were still fresh, the Kavieng Diocese wasted no time and it is one of the first to move head on with the issues and make its way forward towards the implementation stage.

About 80 participants took an active part in the discussions and came up with a priority plans for the diocese which prioritized the following issues and will work towards achieving :their goals. Family topped the agenda followed by Formation, Self reliance, Communication and Social Issues.

In light to the country’s upsurge in social, law and order and family problems today, the family is seen as the first and foremost unit where children should be taught the foundations of good moral, Christian principles, values and self discipline. Therefore, work activities are planned towards strengthening families in order to tackle on the role which parents play and to sanctify their families in keeping with God’s command.

Dressed in colourful traditional attire are some of these young children at the GA church service.

Celebration of the Holy Sacraments and Liturgy in Communion through active participation, integral formation and renewal of the laity, clergy and religious and youth, education and health were also high on the diocesan priorities plan issues.

Other equally important issues taken on board include self reliance, diocese networking and ecumenism with other denominations, networking with other denomination such as the Anglican, Lutheran and United Churches, integration of gospel values and culture, preservation of the environment and to assist the poor and marginalized

The participants realized that there are challenges ahead in fulfilling the missions, reform in government, business and social environment.
“Where these sectors, primarily account for the ordinary citizens, their endowment by means of goods and services are hardly felt. The most depressing in this regar5ds is health and education, “ a statement released at the end of the workshop said.

The statement said that bad leadership at the provincial and national levels and corruption is having an adverse effect on the Kavieng hospital which is facing an acute shortage of basic medicines and common drugs, thus the delivery of these to the rural health centers and aid posts are equally depressing.

The statement further called on the relevant authorities to formulate a PNG homegrown curriculum which will be used to benefit the ongoing school leavers when they return to their communities. Other related issues discussed include technical and vocational education to open their doors to all citizens and not only school aged candidates with more emphasis on village and community oriented programs. School fee system, they said, must be revised to allow some concession for the parents as the current system was over taxing parents for their children’s education from the earliest in terms of age until reaching the tertiary institutions.

The statement said that with this, allowance must be made for schools to live off the land where and when available to them. And funding for land developments must be provided by the National and provincial governments.
On gender balance, women and families, the statement said that foreign permissive culture has invaded and negatively impacted on women, marriage and family values in PNG and is posing a threat to them. The good cultural values have taken a backstage and an imbalance, said the statement, resulting in the dignity of women in marriage under serious threat. In light to all this, all sectors in government and existing agencies including the churches were called on to help minimize the unfortunate imbalance
