Chimbu Premier Motel - Kundiawa

Almost everything about Papua New Guinea is a tourist attraction.

This includes the country’s diverse geography, flora and fauna, and colorful traditional culture, a German tour operator said recently.

Extra Tour promotional manager Kirsten Clahr - who came into the country recently to see PNG’s culture and dive sites – was simply awestruck.

She said the country was so virginal and natural and she would go out her way to promote it when she returned home.

“It has a magnificent scenery, pristine coral atolls, fish, vast river and delta systems, savannah plains seemingly everywhere, and vast rain forests,” Ms Clair extolled.

“ The birds here are exotic and colorful –birds of paradise, parrots, lorikeets, hawks, hornbills".

“There are so many that I don’t know the names but I can only describe them as awesome.”

One tourist attraction she mentioned was the rugged mountains, gorges, and fast – flowing creeks of the Highlands.

She said some countries in mainland Europe attracted millions of tourists simply because of their rugged geography.

A certain couple in PNG’s rugged Chimbu Province, knowing its enormous tourism potential, has gone out of its way to provide the ideal “home away from home”.

Peter and Mary Iggy, proprietors of Chimbu Premier Motel, have done massive renovation work on their property.

Premier Motel, true to name, is now one of the premier accommodation facilities in Chimbu and the entire Highlands region.

Premier started off as a small backpacker lodge some years back under the name of Chimbu Backpacker Lodge.

It gradually developed as the number of overseas and local clients increased.

The addition of a double - storey building with conference rooms, two separate bars, an extended car park, 30 self - contained units and a VIP suite makes it the most – comfortable and luxurious accommodation in cold Chimbu.

The motel is located at the very entrance to towering Mount Wilhelm, one of PNG’s greatest tourist attractions, which peaks at 4500m.

The scenery of precarious Yogumugl on the hills to the north – east, Kamanku villages located above the small town of Kundiawa, and the snaking Highlands Highway will take your breath away.

Early morning fog, reverberating yodeling of villagers, birds welcoming a new day, and smoke from houses in distant hills is what makes Premier Motel a unique experience.

A multitude of exotic plants abound in the motel’s garden, complemented by local carvings.

It is the home of overseas dignitaries during visits to the province, including ambassadors from various countries.

It is not a different tale for local politicians, public servants and corporate bodies.

Everything about the facility is friendly and hospitable from the two proprietors down to the young staff.

The Iggys say their aim is to make every guest feel at home, especially when they are far away from their loved ones.

“We want our clients to get more than their money’s worth,” said Peter Iggy.

“ We want them to feel that they are here as part of a family.

“Tourism is a big industry.

“But it is not something for money alone.

“It is something where our personalities, our actions and our services have to go in line with our visitors’ inner feelings.”

“Chimbu is a province with potential tourism attractions.

“We are prepared to act at the highest standards a go - between our tourism attraction sites and our overseas visitors.”

Overseas travelers have the chance to visit some of the province’s cultural centers where traditional arts and crafts are stored.

Any trip around the province is an adventure of its own with the mountains, deep gullies and gorges, fast – flowing and icy – cold mountain streams, farms and gardens on precarious hillsides and the friendly local populace.

Mr Iggy said the Tourism Promotion Authority’s failure to visit and promote tourist attractions in the country has a negative impact on the industry’s growth and development.

“We small players on the ground are doing everything possible to bring in foreign visitors together with their money,” he said.

“ If the Tourism Promotion Authority was able to visit all possible tourism attraction sites, accommodation facilities, keep reliable data, and created more publicity overseas, we would not have all our current money problems.”

The Premier Motel beckons from rugged Kundiawa, Chimbu Province.
