Key issues in improving animal production in PNG

Chickens / Poultry

Market opportunities exist for the sale of live chicken, which can fetch prices up to twice that of frozen chicken in supermarkets.

The most active group in the live chicken market is the peri-urban community.

The main issue in peri-urban chicken production is the high cost of feed and the cost of day-old chickens. Alternative feed sources should be investigated that will reduce the cost of production.

Cattle

The smallholder cattle industry in PNG is on the decline. The Australian Centre for International Atgricultural Research Red Meat Study confirmed this, while at the same time acknowledging ehe great potential of the sector.

The key reasons for the decline have been identified as:
  • ineffective extension and technical support
  • unavailability of appropriate management packages; and
  • lack of credit facilities.

Rabbits

Rabbits are an animal with the potential to be integrated with subsistence farming systems and they are starting to receive interest,
especially in the marginal areas, mainly through the work of missions and NGO's.

Pigs

Village pigs continue to retain their nationwide importance both culturally and as a source of protein.

The key issue for village pig production is developing options for cheaper and more cost-effective feed using locally available feed such as copra meal, fishmeal and other readily available starch and energy feed sources.

Fish Farming

Inland fisheries have the ptoential to contribute to animal protein requirements of rural inland communities.

A small but well established system of extension and fingerling production exists that is currently not widely used.

Preliminary evaluations at the pr9oject sites indicate a very high production per hectare.

The activity needs to be brought under a formal and well-supported program to carry out appropriate assessments on productivity, and to identify constraints and opportunities for appropriate extension work.
