Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat announced that season 36 will be split in two halves with the first to end with episode 7 of the 13 episodes. Moffat says it will give the season, two premieres, two finales and more event episodes.

The BBC Press Office says that the split season came from a request from Moffat so he could write a new story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle.

The split in TV seasons is already been done with US TV shows. This is perhaps the first time that a split season will be done for a British TV show in Doctor Who.
