One of the most common questions asked of me over the years I have spent in Papua New Guinea, is about driving licences; motor vehicle renewals etc.

Hence, I thought I would share with you some information which I feel will be of benefit.

Firstly, there are two offices here in Port Moresby. The most popular and easiest to find for new arrivals, is situated at the end of Kunai Street, off Waigani Drive. If you are driving down the highway from Port Moresby towards the airport, and glance to the left before the Stop and Shop Waigani roundabout, you will notice a new building on the left hand side of the road.

Turn left at the Stop and Shop, Waigani roundabout into Waigani Drive, then left again into Kunai Street.

For expatriates entering Papua New Guinea, your overseas drivers licence will be sufficient for the first three months (90 days), however, it is always wise to obtain your Papua New Guinea licence as soon as possible.

Police roadblocks are quite common here in Papua New Guinea, and the last thing you need is to be harrassed over a drivers licence. Therefore it is strongly 'recommended' that you obtain your licence in the first week of arriving here wherever possible.

If for whatever reason, you do not make the journey to Waigani to request a PNG drivers licence, it is compulsory that you do so, once the extended period has expired.

It is also the 'law' here that you carry on you at all times your drivers 'licence', failure to do so may cost you an on the spot fine (if you are lucky) or a visit to the local police station.

To obtain your licence, proceed to the office as mentioned above in Kunai Street. You will be asked to fill in a form, produce your overseas current licence and pay the required sum of money.

After a short waiting period, your name will be called. At this point of time, you will be taken into a room to have your photo taken.

Shortly thereafter, you will be given a laminated card that resembles a 'credit card' in size, which bears your photograph.

It is also recommended that you take a photocopy of your licence as quickly as possible so that in the event you loose your licence or your wallet/handbag is stolen, you can quite easily quote your old 'licence number'.

In the event of this happening, your next visit will not be so painful compared to going through the process of the staff trying to locate your old licence number on their computer.

There are various classes of licences depending on the type of vehicle you are qualified to drive. The most common being Class 1 which is for an ordinary motor vehicle. Class 3 is for a vehicle carrying more than 9 passengers, and Class 6 for a vehicle such as a 15 seater bus or a large truck.

Please note: Vehicles here in PNG, travel on the left hand side of the road.

The cost of a drivers licence is K60.00

Alternatively, there is another Traffic Registry Office located in Gordon's, nextdoor to the **** shop.

To reach this registry office, drive along the highway heading from Port Moresby to the Airport.

Drive over the overpass, Waigani Road/Stop and Shop area and continue on until you notice such landmarks on the left hand side of the road such as Plumbers & Builders Supplies; a Hardware Store and then a green building on the corner.

On the opposite side of the road, you will see 'Fotofast', PNG Art and Pit Stop Motors.

Turn left at the green building and drive down the road. Take the next right and you should see the following entrance way:
