Children immunization program underway in EHP

THE all-out Supplementary Immunization Activity (SIA) conducted throughout the Eastern Highlands Province was conducted successfully according to the Eastern Highlands Provincial Administrator, Munare Uyassi.

The SIA commenced on August 16 and was supposed to have been completed on the 27th, however, due to the inaccessibility of some of the remote locations in the province it continued until last week

The immunization program targetted babies to eleven-year old children. These children were given measles OPV and Vitamin A. The target coverage was over 95 %.

Mr Uyassi stated that the program is part of a national immunization, which is the initiative of the National Health Department. And Eastern Highlands is the fourth province to implement this immunization program.

The Provincial Division of Health in conjunction with National Department of Health had involved all eight districts of Eastern Highlands with micro-planning and budgeting for the immunization activity.

A funding of K140,217 was allocated for the exercise.

During the exercise all parents and guardians were asked to bring along their children not already immunized to the visiting medical teams for immunization.

Agnes Subi, a mother of twins from Loseve village in the Lufa district of Eastern Highlands was happy that such medical exercise was conducted because medical staff were able to travel to her village to immunize her babies.

“Similar exercise must be carried out if there is money available because I’m sure many babies in rural areas are not yet immunized,” Ms Subi said.
