PNG art, 'uniquely unique' by William Natera

PAPUA New Guinea traditional contemporary music is believed by observers of the music industry to be the niche in the international music market that producers have been searching for.

It's a contentious issue, as is the same argument in relation to PNG contemporary art (painting, drawings, etc) such as that displayed at the Body Art and Hair Show 2003 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Port Moresby
last night.

The event, organised to raise funds for the recently established women's refuge in the capital, showcased the work of 17 talented local artists, their stunning designs presented on the...equally as stunning bodies of models with rather interesting hairstyles.

The artists ranged from those who are popular but still relatively new to the industry like brothers Jeffrey and Mairi Feeger to veterans like Speer

Despite the difference in age and experience between the artists, all the designs carried that touch of PNG that - in spite of the adopting of non-traditional art-forms such as dot-painting - remains so 'uniquely unique'.

Present at the show were leading PNG fashion designers like Shane Wong, perhaps exploring the possibilities of using some of the work.

In August 2002 the Ice Fashion Awards in Port Moresby showcased the creative inspiration, passion and sophistication of PNG designers and provided a platform to showcase their work.

Works of art by local artists, Jeffry and Mairi Feeger were auctioned for K2500 and K1800 respecctively.

The Body Art and Hair Show provided the same opportunity for PNG artists and if there is some colloboration between them and designers such as Wong in the future, we should see some terrific fashion designs.

As the debate continues about contemporary art being that niche in the international market, what is certain is that the work seen last night was good work which helped to ensure that some woman or child looking for protection at the refuge will find it.
