PM WELCOMES TELIKOM'S NEW PREPAID SERVICE :
Media Release - 30 th July, 2003.
The acting Prime Minister and Minister for Treasury, Hon. Bart Philemon, has commended the PNG Telikom Board and Management for its initiative to launch the new prepaid Telikad service.
Mr Philemon said the new service would be launched this Friday 1st August, 2003.
"Telikom is well-positioned in the marketplace to make telephony more affordable and accessible to as many Papuan New Guineans as possible. This is in the line the Government's committment to bring basic services to the people," Mr Philemon said.
Over the next five years, Telikom will be installing 5,000 public-access phones in as many locations as is commercially viable throughout Papua New Guinea. "This complements the Government's rural telecommunciations program."
Minister Philemon said that telecommunciations is also recognised as a prime mover of modern day economies. "Telecommunciations is acknowledge worldwide for the many opportunities it can generate, mainly through additional business, trade and commerce," he said.
The acting Prime Minister added that the prepaid Telikad service would also impact positively on the tourism industry in the country.
