The Wharehouse Nightclub – one of Port Moresby’s prominent disco clubs, came alive on Friday night as fundraising drives towards the trip for to the Kokoda Memorial AFL games in Sydney this year heats up.

The AFL Sydney Swans team members are supposedly staging a game on the 23rd of August this year at the Telstra Sydney Stadium, to commemorate the historical event of Kokoda.

This is following a five-year commitment of the people of Kokoda in the Oro province of Papua New Guinea and the members of the Sydney Swans AFL team in Australia.

The commitment was made last year (2002) with the agreement that the main takings for the day will go towards the Kokoda War Memorial Scholarship Trust also established on the same year.

In line with the Kokoda agreement and as part of the planned game, four officials from the National Museum and Art Gallery in PNG have been invited to participate as pottery exhibitionists in the activity. The four are currently trying to raise K16, 000 which will cover the cost of their traveling and other expenses.

The four officials have been given the opportunity to showcase some of PNG’s well-known pottery – the Lapita Pottery Exhibition – during the time in which the games will be staged.

Four colleagues in the department of archaeology will be traveling well before the 23rd August so they will have enough time to get everything ready for the exhibition.

According to one of the officials it will be a “one day’ exhibition which is purposely to give people there are taste of our own culture.

Having fun!
