View Full Version : Rimbunan Hijau Initiates Community Development Program in Gulf Province

The company enables resource owners in the Vailala and Purari areas to actively participate in rural development.

Landowners in the Vailala and Purari areas in Gulf Province are now able to actively participate in the infrastructure and development of their areas.

Answering the calls for increased downstream processing in Gulf Province, Rimbunan Hijau has facilitated the implementation of two new community based, small scale sawmilling projects under its community development program. The two new projects brings the number of community based sawmills in the region to four.

One of the program's objectives is to enable landowners to produce sawn timber for infrastructure development such as residential and communal buildings.

Additionally, the projects will provide local employment and long term local income.

Rimbunan Hijau will facilitate the provision of supervision, technical assistance and training in collaboration with the Timber and Forestry training College in Lae to ensure the projects are well managed.

A spokesman for the Vailala landowners said: "The sawmill will enhance our living conditions in terms of improved housing and employment in our area.

Mr Alois Koivi, a community leader in the Purari area added: "The Upper Purari area is a very remote part of the Gulf Province with no government services at all. It is the first time that such an opportunity has been provided for us.

Recognising that agriculture development is vital to achieve long term socio-economic sustainability in the rural areas, the company is in the process of establishing a model Trust Fund in conjunction with the Provincial Administration and the Landowner Company.

The Trust sets out the objectives of economic development as including :

Establishing the participation of landowners in their capacity as agriculture producers, notably by improving access to all factors of production (lands, inputs, extension services and training).
Improving rural productivity, notably by transfer of appropriate technology and the rational exploitation of plant and animal resources.
Diversifying job creating rural activities and expanding activities contributing to external income.
