The Government of Japan offers three types of scholarships as electives: the Professional Training Course, Undergraduate Course and the Research Course to Papua New Guinea students wishing to study at a Japanese Professional Training School (Senshu-Gakko) or Japanese Universities.

The arrangements of each course are as follows:

For the Professional Training Course (Senshu-Gakko Students) 2004 : Applicants should have completed Grade 12 (or will complete senior high school by March 2004) and must be about 17 years and less than 22 years of age as of 1 April, 2003 (ie born between 2nd April, 1982 and 1 April, 1987).

The tenure of the scholarship offered for ProfessionalTraining Course is three years from April 2004 to March 2007. The grantee of the scholarship will attend a one-year Japanese language - training course and a two year course at a professional training school in the fields of CivilEngineering, Teleccommunications Electronics, Hotel Management, Tourism etc.

For the Undergraduate Course 2004 : The Tenure of the scholarship offered for the Undergraduate Course is five years from Aril 2004 to March 2009. The grantee will attend a one-year course on the Japanese language and then go onto a national or private university for four years in a specific field. For the undergraduate course, applicants shouldhave completed grade 12 (or will complete senior high school by March 2003) and must be about 17 and less than 22 years of age as of 1 April 2004 (ie born between April 2, 1981 and 1 April 1986).

For the Research Course 2004 : The tenure of the scholarship offered for Research Course is one and half years from October 2004 to March 2006 or two years from April 2004 to March 2006. The grantee will attend 6 month's study of the Japanese language training course. For the Research Course applicants must be university or college graduates with a bachelor's degree and must be under 35 years of age on the 1st of April 2004 (ie born on and after 2 April 1969).

Information sheets and applications forms can be obtained from the Embassy of Japan, and the application forms completely filled in with all the required documents should be submitted to the Embassy no later than 30 June 2003.

Please note that all inquiries for application forms for the Professional Training Course and Undergraduate Course must be accompanied with a copy of your grade 12 certificate or a certifying document and also inquiries for Research course application forms must be accompanied with your bachelor's degree certificate or a certifying document. Inquiries for Application forms will close on the 20th June 2003).
