New Ela Beach Hostel for Single Women

The Port Moresby City Mission is currently looking for tenants for its new single ladies Hostel. The old PNGBC single menıs mess at Ela Beach has now been completely refurbished and restored. It has been fully fitted out with new furniture and made very secure and comfortable.

With ocean views from most of the rooms this prestigious new accommodation for ladies, working in executive positions, is by far the best hostel accommodation in the Port Moresby and is in easy walking distance to the centre of town.

Hostel roomıs are located on the first floor of the building, while the rooms on the ground floor have been set aside for use as a Womenıs Refuge and Child Abuse Crisis Centre. Once the Refuge Centre opens the building will be protected by 24 hr security, and a full time cook will be employed.

There are 19 rooms available for rental and cost for this accommodation including meals is as follows:-

Two girls sharing one room cost K260 per fortnight per person. This includes breakfast and dinner at night seven days a week and lunch on weekends.

One girl requiring room to herself K400 per fortnight. This includes breakfast and dinner at night seven days a week and lunch on weekends.

Please advise any single ladies on your staff that may be in need of accommodation. Should you wish to inspect the hostel before making a decision please contact Larry George on 320 0606 to arrange a suitable time.

As there are only 19 rooms and 3 have already been occupied a quick decision will need to be made.

Yours faithfully,

Larry D. George

A rundown hostel has been turned into a modern amentity to accommodate abused children, battered women and a single girls' hostel.

The former Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation hostel at Ela Beach in Port Moresby was refurbished by the Port Moresby City Mission at a cost of more than K400,000. It is now ready for opening on April 28.

City Mission executive director Larry George said last Thursday the building would be managed by the People AGainst Child Exploitation - PNG (PACE-PNG) of which Mr George is treasurer.

He said although there were no statistics to show the number of children being sexually and physically abused, stories he heard from boys who came to City Mission for help showed it was a big problem.

"The figure is an unknown quantity. There is so much happening in the settlements. The boys report of incest, their uncles doing things to their sisters but these these things are being swept under the carpet and nobody is doing anything about it, " he said.

He said three to four years ago, a meeting on child abuse was held from which PACE-PNG was set up. They have been given the mandate to run the new building at Ela Beach.

A full-time nurse and a welfare officer would be employed to look after the women and children.

A cook would prepare meals for the women and children as well as the young girls that rent rooms.

I may be wrong on this, but don't you think that executive ladies paying alot of money to stay in what appears to be a great place is also a refuge for people with welfare problems?

I understand the great work by City Mission but maybe a separate premises for this would be appreciated as these money paying tenants deserve a decent private life within their premises for social freedom without having to worry about families/children. K260/wk is a lot of money!
