Location: Oceania/South Pacific. It is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and is 160 kilometres north of Australia.

Area: It has a total land area of 470,000 square kilometres, comprising both the mainland and some 600 offshore islands.

Papua New Guinean's Attitude to the Land: Land is a permanent and integral part of a village community. The present land "owners" have the usage rights only, and therefore hold the properties in custody for their ancestors and descendants. The lands cannot be bought nor sold, but usage rights can be handed over to other parties.

Status: UN Country/Member of the British Commonwealth

Capital City: Port Moresby

Main Cities: Lae, Rabaul, Madang, Mt. Hagen, Wewak, Wewak, Goroka and Rabaul

People: PNG is the most heterogeneous in the world. Papua New Guineans, most of whom are Melanesians, vary widely in their physical characteristics, ethnic background and cultural types.

Population: About 5,000,000, 15% live in the ten major urban areas. (Port Moresby - 250,000; Lae - 100,000; Madang - 30,000; Mt. Hagen - 55,000; Wewak - 23,000; Goroka - 30,000, and; Rabaul - 20,000)

Climate: Moderate tropical with high levels of seasonal rainfall (Highlands - 4 to 32 degrees Celsius; Lowland, coastal and island areas - average 27 degrees Celsius daily)

Languages: English and other numerous local languages brought about by isolation of most communities in the past. English is used by government, commerce and laws, and a compulsory subject in schools. About 800 different languages (1/3 of the languages known in the world) have evolved and are still spoken.

Religions: Two-thirds of the population are Christians with Catholic and Lutheran churches as the largest denominations.
