Papua New Guinea’s coffee exports can bring in more than K1 billion annually and not the normal K300 million.

That’s according to leading national exporter and processor, Jerry Kapka of Kongo Coffee, at the PNG Coffee Festival and Trade Fair.

“My view of the coffee industry is that we have to bring in more money into the country,” he said.

“By doing that, we have to go into downstream processing and specialty coffee production.

“We also have to do more promotion and marketing overseas.

“By doing that, we can increase the receipts from our products.

“I really believe that our industry is worth more than K1 billion, not K300 million annually.

“It’s worth that and we can earn that in our export receipts, if we add value to our exports.

“That is what other countries like Indonesia, India, and Columbia will earn.

“They produce the same amount of coffee as us, but because of their promotion and marketing effort, are earning more.”
