18^TH MAY 2005
Welcome to another edition of Le Riche Colours! Been wondering what the “big dreamer” has been up too? What has she achieved in 8 months since the last newsletter? Aren’t you dying to find out????? Of course you are! Well sorry to say, I’ve packed up the business and given up…….*NOT!!!!!* Though to be honest I cannot tell you how many times the idea of giving up was very* TEMPTING*. Sometimes I wonder why I challenge myself the way I do when there are days it creates so much stress that I feel like I am a bomb to explode. (Okay to be honest, I actually throw myself on the floor and start bawling like a baby and throw a wobbly to out do any little child!) But despite those days if I was to look at the alternative,* BEING BORED* give me insanity any day!
What was the new challenge?????? After 6 months of hibernation I am* self publishing my first children’s book*! I am just about to go into print with an exciting, NEVER DONE BEFORE* “PAPUA NEW GUINEA – TRIBAL STICKER BOOK WITH FUN ACTIVITIES”!* Papua New Guinea is unique in it’s culture however whilst working with my tribal calendar I discovered that the magnificent culture is not readily being passed onto the next generation. In addition, tourist bound to PNG to experience the diversity and go home with hundreds of photos of tribes men and women but having no idea which province they come from. This new tribal sticker book with fun activities interacts with many ages so that all become involved in culture preservation and awareness. How? The book entails:
·
Match the sticker to the same shape (children just love
interactive books and it’s a* fun activity* for very young
children to much older ones).
· Once the stickers are in place you are left with a picture book* highlighting* something distinct from* pretty much every province* in PNG! Do you know where Dukduks are from????
· The text is brief but contains a few hard words but that’s where parents come in. * Read to your kids*! Always great for family bonding and* learn whilst your kids do*!
· To encourage kids to read the book, there is a fun* crossword puzzle* with all answers being found within the book.
· There is a* map of PNG* where the children are asked to colour the provinces in different colours (kids just love colouring in!) They are asked to close the book and then memorise the different provinces of PNG. How many can you recall of hand?????
· To ensure the kids stay active, another* colour me in page* has been enclosed (nothing like quiet kids when travelling overseas or long distance by car!)
· Finally the last page,* “My Culture”*. A page where children are encourage to do research and record their findings on THEIR culture. There is even a space allocated for them to put a photo of themselves dressed traditionally (or at least of someone they know). You don’t necessarily have to be from PNG to fill out this page because no matter which country you are from there is culture!
· And* BONUS* offer, the book has one page of extra* STICKERS* to use as you please!
So what are you waiting for? Place an order today! Okay maybe* RESERVE your book today* as it’s still another week or two before the book is actually in print (thanks to all the hick ups I am experiencing). But fingers crossed I will have some stock at the next* “LUKIM PNG NUA” show. MARK YOU CALENDARS! 24**^TH ** to 26**^TH ** JUNE at the HIDEAWAYS HOTEL, PORT MORESBY - * Price? Good question! Will have to get back to you on that one, but I am praying if costs don’t go up anymore they will retail around $A12 to $15 (Australian dollars). Of course for all you retailers out there, wholesale prices will be available for bulk orders.
Oh and I almost forgot! -* Sales of this book benefit Rotary Club, Kimbe! * Now doesn’t that make you feel good!
Whilst we are talking about books……*”The Jelani Tree”* which is a book I illustrated last year for a very talented USA author, Caroline Brewer is* NOW IN PRINT*! As they say good things happen to those who wait. It’s been a long journey but so great to see the end product. For more information or to* order your very own copy* (and help raise funds for a worthy cause) go to _www.jelani.org_ <http://www.jelani.org/> .
OTHER UPDATES!
Coming soon you should see* Le Riche Colours in the AIR*! Uh????? Sorry won’t reveal anymore until the project takes off the ground. (Ha…ha…get it!). As I’ve learnt, things take TIME to get underway. In the meantime I will sit and chew my finger nails waiting in anticipation. Don’t you just love suspense!
As for New York. I am giving art* licensing trade shows a rest* this year due to my concentrations in promoting my art work and book within PNG. There are also plans to work with a China company in getting my art work on a variety of products which will be mostly distributed within PNG. But don’t hold your breath, I have a feeling it will take quite a while before things get underway.
Continuing on - the year started off well with a very successful art exhibition in Lae (thanks so much Karen for all your help!) For those visiting Lae, you cannot miss the best arts and craft shop I have ever seen -* Melanesian Arts Centre*! There are carvings or something from just about every province in PNG in that shop! For those who don’t happen to be in PNG don’t fret…..you can visit their website _www.melanesianarts.com_ <http://www.melansianarts.com/>!
Another highlight of the year - I donated a painting “Intense Rhythm” to a sport fundraising event and it auctioned off for* K5500*!!!! Great to see the value of Le Riche artwork is increasing steadily by the year (as I said, invest now because one day, one day…..who knows how much a
Le Riche original will be!). Oh I love to dream!
In addition I proudly support the Susu Mama organization which does a great job in helping mothers in rural areas. This year the auction of two Le Riche originals (“Wish Upon the Unicorns” and “Colourful Meri”) proved to be successful in raising greatly needed funds. Thanks to those who supported the event.
September 2004, exhibited with other PNG artists in Port Moresby. The event went very well and I will once again be exhibiting at the next* Luk Save Art Exhibition held on the 16**^th ** September 2005 at the Port Moresby Yacht club. * Hope to see you there!
Now an update on my art licensing contracts already established, (in brief otherwise we will be here all day!):
*Rug contract* going very well. Visit _www.foreign-accents.com_ <http://www.foreign-accents.com/> under heading “Fiesta” code No. REN34A and REN2860 to view (or purchase!) a Nathalie Le Riche rug design. The designs are very different from everyone else! Currently new designs are being under review for their new catalogue.
*Puzzle contract*. I had mentioned in my last newsletter that I had landed a contract with two puzzle companies, but had doubt they would sell due to the pricing - $US175 to $US4000. Well guess what! One of the companies have been successful in selling Le Riche designs on puzzles worth* $US3000*! (Can you image, that is K10000 for one puzzle!) The puzzles are truly amazing as they are cut into cute little shapes that include fish and even a little scuba diver! You get no picture with the puzzle which adds to the challenge. Custom made puzzles with any of the Le Riche designs are available. Just let me know and I will send your request onto the puzzle companies. Prices vary according to the size and how many puzzle pieces. Cheapest for 75 pieces is around $US175 (but don’t quote me).
*Scrub contract* (fabric design for hospital uniforms) – one design was a hit, the other didn’t go into production however due to the success of the first design they are now working with another design of mine to go into print.
The knick knack contract (which I thought was going to be a big one) – this one went down the tube! Ah heck, you grieve and then you move on!
*Tribal Calendar contract* – 2006 is in the making! (Retailers, place your order now so that your stock will arrive in time for the Christmas sales - strongly suggest Air Mail!). The 2005 calendars proved to be successful. A great tip – when 2005 is over, why not frame the pictures?
My next project is to do a large* painting* or two for* Hoskins airport*. I’ve never done a very big painting before so it will be an interesting challenge to see what I come up with. The painting will be based on subjects found within the WNB province. Can’t wait to get it finished…oh I better start it first!
Haven’t been painting that much during the past eight months (due to the tribal book) but after a fun fishing competition in Madang, I got inspired to paint some* game fish* (but of course WITH COLOUR!). * Check out my website to view the latest artwork! –* _www.picturetrail.com/leriche_ <http://www.picturetrail.com/leriche>. * Albums updated* are: Reef Album, Simple Tribal, Portrait & Oil Paste. A few new paintings are in the sold section too.
*Can you help?* It has been noted that a few products have entered the PNG market which is breaching my copyright. If anyone notices Pappindo or any other store stocking fabric which features my art work would you kindly let me know. It is noted that there are currently coffee cups on the market in a few PNG stores, however they have been approved until stock has run out. Retailers if you have been approached with any products featuring Le Riche designs I strongly urge you check with me first if there is an art licensing contract on that product. There are* copyright laws in PNG* which entail hefty fines for those breaching my copyright. I thank you for keeping an eye out for me.
In a nutshell, the past eight months has taught me that when challenging yourself with something new, fear will always be on your shoulder trying to hold you back. Learn to* conquer your fear, and accept that you make mistakes* (costly ones too). How? Just believe in yourself and accept that things do go wrong in life. On days when you feel like it’s all caving in and you feel like you have no idea how to move on, give yourself a break and get refocused into believing that you will find a way to get over the hurdle. Surprisingly, the solution will appear! As for happiness, don’t delude yourself into believing success, fame, money or “if only I had” attitude will bring you happiness. True happiness is when you achieve a balance in life and appreciate every little aspect of TODAY! Such a simple task but how foolish us humans can be in not applying it to our lives EVERYDAY.
So here’s to happiness and appreciating TODAY. Look at all the good things in your life and say thanks. I also* dare you to surprise at least one loved person in your life with a bunch of unexpected flowers, a nice card or even a simple hug saying “I love you’!*
Live your dream and be happy!
Cheers
Nathalie Le Riche
