View Thread : Waves destroys homes along Motuan coast

Tsunami sized waves hit Barakau villagea along Motuan coast outside Port Moresby about 7am and swept away six houses, leaving over 40 individuals affected.

The villagers reported an unusually low tied on their beachfront before the destruction. There were no reports of casualties as those caught by surprise swam to their safety after the wave struck their homes.

In a separate incident, five Papua New Guineans in the area of the Gulf province, were identified to be the first known casualties of the destructive cyclone Ingrid yesterday. The five and 8 other people including infants were heading home on Tuesday night when their boat capsized as Ingrid hit the top part of Australia.The five were proclaimed dead.

The National Weather Office has issued strong warnings for people to take extra care when going out to sea even after the strong winds caused by cyclone Ingrid have subsided. The Weather Office continues to monitor the movement of Cyclone Ingrid.
