THE CHAIRMAN of the Coffee Industry Corporation, Pugma Kopi has applauded the commitment by the Enga Provincial Government through the Governor, Peter Ipatas to co-fund the establishment of a new coffee factory in Enga

The coffee factory currently being constructed at Wapenamanda is estimated to cost approximately K1-million. The project is headed by a local businessman from Wapenamanda, Patrick Komba.

Mr Kopi stated that the governor’s commitment to coffee in Enga is definitely a step in the right direction as farmers would benefit greatly in processing their coffee at a central location to receive income as well as support the economy of the province.

Enga province produces good quality organic coffee, however, over the years lack of sufficient processing mill has been a problem. Additionally, transportation difficulties faced by farmers to bring their produce to a central market has been a problem.

There is currently one coffee processing mill at Wapenamanda owned by Maini Farmers and situated near Pausa.

In commending the governor, Mr Kopi challenged other governors whose province is producing coffee to do likewise.

Mr Kopi stated that during these tough economic times, it is better to work together in sharing resources and funding to establish infrastructure which would benefit people who ultimately matters most in economic development.

The Chairman also welcome the commitment by the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) through its Sustainable Development department to fund the set up of a central coffee nursery at Wapenamanda.

The nursery project was a result of a letter to PJV early this year by the CIC farmer training and extension coordinator (PFTEC), Pi Ipar to PJV requesting for assistance

The purpose of the nursery was to serve farmers in the Wapenamanda and Wabag districts who lost substantial amount of coffee trees during tribal fights.
